Rapper and mental health advocate Shocka has officially released his much-anticipated album, Vulnerability Is The New Cool, on World Mental Health Day. The album seeks to challenge societal norms and break the stigma surrounding vulnerability, especially within the Black community, by fusing conscious rap with pop influences.
The album was a labor of love, recorded over a four-year span in collaboration with close friend and producer Otis. Starting in 2020, Shocka dedicated years to crafting a body of work that reflects his personal journey and commitment to raising awareness about mental health struggles, particularly those faced by Black men.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the album, Shocka says: “I did an Instagram Live, and the women brought up how many Black males were being sectioned and the suicide rates. I thought, ‘How can I decrease that number by just 1 percent?’ Vulnerability helped me, and if I can express that through music, maybe others will find it cool and feel comfortable expressing themselves too.”
The lead single, “Good Time,” offers a more light-hearted contrast to the album’s deeper themes. The upbeat track highlights the balance Shocka has found between his music career and personal life, serving as a reminder to take a step back and enjoy the simpler moments. The song playfully addresses the frequent questions he receives about settling down and his life outside the music industry.
A native of Tottenham’s Broadwater Farm, Shocka draws from his roots and the music of his upbringing, citing influences like Heartless Crew, Kano, and Wretch 32. He describes his sound as conscious pop, blending meaningful messages with catchy, pop-infused choruses. Inspired by the likes of Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, 2Pac, and Nas, Shocka’s storytelling resonates with audiences, offering both personal reflection and universal relevance.
Shocka’s transition from his days with the grime collective Marvell to becoming a recognized mental health advocate has been remarkable. He has been honored with two mental health awards, including Best Storyteller, underscoring his ability to convey powerful messages through his music.
Reflecting on his journey, Shocka emphasizes the healing power of music: “Music can heal people. I never know whose life I’m saving with a song, and that inspires me to keep going.”
Vulnerability Is The New Cool is now available on all major streaming platforms, encouraging listeners to embrace vulnerability and foster deeper conversations about mental health.
