There is a lot to unpack when discussing Los Angeles’ own iLLijah Moon, so we’ll start from the beginning; the son of Chilean and Honduran immigrants, iLLijah has been making music since his school days, even co-founding a music group in high school called “iLL Music,” which is how he got his name. “iLL” stands for “Independent Living Lifestyle,” a mantra that contributes greatly to his uniqueness and ability to stand out from the crowd.
Influence wise, iLLijah ventures to different corners of the music world (Kendrick Lamar, George Clinton, Immortal Technique and Guns N’ Roses to name a few) for sonic influence, citing them and many others as the driving forces behind who he is as an artist today.
“Sometimes it’s beyond unintentional but because I’ve listened to them so much over the years, they made me put songs together with their inspiration behind it [and I don’t even notice it],” iLLijah said. “I think each artist had something to do with me falling in love with creating and finding different ways to put the art together.”
A standout track in the ever-growing iLLijah Moon discography is the recently released “Distracted,” a catchy song that still feels personal and, as he puts it, “digestible.”
“Over the years, I’ve [tended] to say too much, so I tried to sum things up a bit,” iLLijah explained. “I remember recording this and needing an intro because I wanted to sound as if I had just been drunk or faded all day.”
“That’s how I made the intro and I went in trying to sound like I was trying to speak but couldn’t,” he continued. “That is the reason why the song name and general idea is ‘Distracted’.”
The only thing on this creator’s mind for the future is dropping more music and staying consistent. He’s increasing his catalog to the point where he has four separate projects ready after the one he’s currently working on. Also, be on the lookout for more performances, videos and other content — and if you don’t find it yourself, iLLijah’s creations will find you.
“Just know this is the beginning of hearing more of me and my name,” iLLijah said. “I’m not known now, but I’ve been in the game for over ten years…I’m not going anywhere because I’m just getting started and I’m ready to make this year the year people know who iLLijah is.”
