Since the release of ‘Full Speed’ earlier in the year, KWONIX – the collaboration project between artists Kwo and Unix – has been moving from strength to strength. Chiming in with their slick brand of soul-soaked R&B, the outfit look to release their latest single ‘sweet karma’.
Looking to make waves across the neo-soul scene, ‘sweet karma’ quickly stands out as a vibrant, colourful slice of contemporary pop. Suave melodies filled with finesse and aura give the single a lightweight feel, coupling groove-laden basslines with an R&B ease in the process. The track follows the aftermath of a breakup and the karma that can come with regretful decisions, highlighting KWONIX’s relatable, honest lyricism.
Speaking about the record, Kwo explains, “’sweet karma.’ was the first full record Unix and I finished together a few years ago. When they sent me the vocals back the first time, I was absolutely floored. This was the point at which I knew we needed to keep working on music together. My favourite part of the song (besides Unix’s unmatched energy, wit, and iconic vocal layering) is the subtle key change that happens for the second verse and chorus. I hope folks catch that or feel it in some way. We’ve been sitting on this track for a while now, and I think it could be the song of the summer even if it’s comin’ out in fall technically.”
Unix adds, “When KWO initially sent over the track to sweet karma, I remember it being completely different from the other stuff he had been sending over. It started with that crazy drum track that made me move in my seat as soon as I pressed play. I didn’t know what the hell to do with that, but I definitely wanted to do something funky because that’s what the guitar told me to do. Back in the spring of 2023, I was writing a few break-up songs for another artist, so naturally, that energy influenced the lyrics to this song. I jokingly thought, “losing me is the worst thing that could happen to someone”, and the words to the first verse poured out of me.”
KWONIX is the brainchild of LA-based producer Kwo and Richmond, VA native Unïx. After meeting virtually in 2023, the pair discovered an unrivalled creative chemistry that quickly led to the creation of KWONIX. Unïx, whose voice has drawn comparisons to the likes of Anderson. Paak, Durand Bernarr, and Moses Sumney, brings a spiritual undercurrent to the duo, whilst Kwo’s jazzy arrangements and luscious tones draw inspiration from legends like Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder. Now stepping into the limelight together, KWONIX looks to turn heads with new music on the horizon.
