If you ask King Hurst where his music comes from, he’ll tell you it’s always been there. Growing up in Manchester, Connecticut, King was the little brother soaking up whatever his older siblings played around the house. “Music has always been involved in my life,” he says. “But as I got older, I started to develop my own taste.”
That taste eventually turned into something more. By seventh grade, King was making music with his friend TPSHAWTY, learning how to turn feelings into songs. It wasn’t until his freshman year of high school that he finally released his first track — but by then, the habit stuck. Now, King and Tony make up Trash City Valuables, or TCV, a duo dedicated to pushing boundaries and refusing to sound like anyone else.
“I have influences, yeah — Tyler, The Creator is a big one,” King says. “But I really try to be as original as I can. I don’t like to copy anybody. I want to stand out as much as possible.”
It’s not just talk. King’s music is hard to pin down — it bounces between genres, moods, and ideas, never settling for the easy answer. He’s not afraid to let his guard down either. His favorite lyric he’s written so far? “I’m walking with my thoughts, not feeling like I’m present.” It’s a line that hits close to home. “That’s been relevant in my life for a while now,” he admits. “I’m not much of a social butterfly. I tend to keep to myself. Sometimes I feel like it’s better for people not to know everything, so I just keep my most important thoughts to myself.”
But even for someone who prefers to keep it low-key, King’s ambitions are anything but small. “I plan on becoming one of the biggest artists on the planet,” he says. “And I want to create something that outlasts me — something that changes the lives of the people around me.”
Recently, King took a break from music to focus on his health after a hospital stay. But now he’s back in the studio, recording again and pushing further. His latest single, “All In,” is, in his own words, his best song yet — and a sign of what’s coming next. If you want a taste of King’s style, that’s the place to start.
