On the heels of “Get Ready,” Toronto singer-songwriter Katie Dauson shares her infectious new single, “Will You Won’t You.” Always genre-fluid and bursting with inspiration, Dauson crafts a track evocative of 1950s rockabilly, a vintage sound Dauson brings to life with passion and modern punch. This new track is a clear love letter to a decades-long tradition that Dauson honors with contemporary edge.
“Will You Won’t You” follows in the footsteps of 70s rockabilly revivalists, including Blondie and George Thorogood, who reinvented the genre for their time. Thorogood’s influence is particularly palpable here; the saxophone he added to his rockabilly band decades ago is all over “Will You Won’t You.” Speaking on Thorogood, Dauson shares, “I love George Thorogood’s guitar playing, and the fact that he added a saxophone player to his band in 1980. Saxophone is such an important instrument in rock and roll and rockabilly, it really elevated his music.”
Alongside producer James Nickle, Dauson crafts a timeless track that brings traditional rockabilly sound to the modern day. Dauson’s use of a fuzz pedal is one such choice; the modern underbelly it adds to the track is palpable. Dauson also recorded the rhythm guitar part with a G&L Comanche, whose Z-coil pickups have a distinctive tone. These deliberate inclusions showcase the care with which Dauson chose to honor rockabilly and bring the sound to modern listeners.
“Will You Won’t You” is a passionate love letter to a genre forgotten by many, though Dauson’s memorable track is sure to fix that. The song captures a spontaneous, joyful spirit, sure to leave listeners tapping their foot along to the beat. “Will You Won’t You” is created with love and reverence, remaining both modernized and baked in tradition. Dauson’s ability to bring rockabilly to life shines brilliantly, and is emblematic of her penchant for reimagining sounds past as only she can.
“With ‘Will You Won’t You,’ Katie Dauson delivers a vibrant, toe-tapping anthem that channels the spirit of classic rockabilly while injecting it with a bold, modern edge,” music publicist Danielle Holian, Decent Music PR, shares. “The track captures her signature blend of vintage inspiration and fearless individuality. It’s playful, gritty, and irresistibly catchy. This single really showcases Katie’s ability to honour the roots of rock and roll while making the sound entirely her own.”
