From Trampoline Crashes to Chart Clashes – Meet Codes, the Canadian Artist Turning Pain into Purpose

From Trampoline Crashes to Chart Clashes – Meet Codes, the Canadian Artist Turning Pain into Purpose

When you hear Codes for the first time, you might notice the tight flows, the versatile beats, or the emotionally sharp lyrics that somehow feel like they were written just for you. But behind the mic, behind the bars, and behind every play on Spotify, there’s a story that goes way deeper than music.

Before Codes was dropping bangers and building an audience from Ontario to Miami, he was literally flying—a Canadian National Trampolinist with Olympic dreams. Until one day, everything changed.

“I was doing a skill I’d landed a hundred times before,” he says. “Then suddenly, I wasn’t. I missed the edge of the trampoline and landed wrong. Snapped one of the bones in my spine. Just like that, it was over.”

What followed was a long, dark stretch. Physically, he was healing—but mentally, he was lost. Angry. Frustrated. Grieving a future that suddenly wasn’t there anymore. So he started writing—not to become a rapper, not to make a hit, but to survive.

“I was just trying to make sense of all the thoughts in my head,” Codes says. “It reminded me of that raw emotion Eminem always tapped into. I wasn’t thinking about a career. I just wanted to let the anger out.”

But as the pages filled, and his friend started laying down beats under the words, something shifted. The pain turned into power. And Codes started to find his voice—not as an athlete anymore, but as an artist.

Creating Music for Every Mood

Ask Codes what kind of music he makes, and he won’t give you a genre—he’ll give you a feeling. Or a dozen of them.

“I make music based on how I’m feeling that day,” he says. “If I’m in a good mood, I’ll make something upbeat. If I’m down, I’ll make something sad or raw. It’s all about honesty.”

That honesty has become his signature. Whether you’re hitting the gym, zoning out in your room, or walking through your own storm, there’s a Codes track for that. He doesn’t chase trends—he just captures what it means to be real.

“I always say: if one person connects with a song, then I’ve done my job.”

From Caledonia to the World

Hailing from Caledonia, Ontario, a small town just outside of Hamilton, Codes has quietly built a name for himself far beyond his hometown. In 2022, he opened for Ekoh on tour stops in Toronto and London, Ontario, and has since performed in Vancouver and Miami, putting his live energy on full display.

And people are listening.

His album “SLICK TALK” has already racked up over 140,000 streams on Spotify, with new listeners discovering him daily. He’s also won multiple online music contests, solidifying his place as a rising independent voice in Canada’s growing alt-rap scene.

Oh—and there’s a music video on the way for his new track “VIBIN”, set to drop in the new year.

More Than a Mic

Music might be his focus now, but Codes brings the same discipline and drive to his craft that made him a national-level athlete. He’s also a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, has multiple national medals for trampoline, and even holds public speaking titles across Canada—a rare combo of physical talent and verbal finesse.

Off-stage, he’s a big-time basketball fan (shoutout to Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors), and always up for trying new sports just for the love of it.

No Excuses, Just Purpose

If there’s one thing Codes wants people to take away from his story, it’s this: you get to choose how your story goes.

“I lost the thing I thought I was born to do,” he says. “But I found something new. And it gave me a reason to wake up every day.”

His mindset? Do it for you. Do it because it helps you breathe. And don’t worry about anyone else’s expectations along the way.
