From Poetry to Music: The Founders Story
Meet Dave Black, the creative force behind The Dave Black Expression! Dave’s artistic path began with a humble ambition rooted in his college days—a trifecta of aspirations involving hockey, literature, and music. Reflecting on his past, Dave recalls his thoughts, “In college, I had three goals driving me… I wanted to have a career somewhere in hockey… I wanted to write a book… and I wanted to write a rock song.”
Dave spent many years running sports centers but rediscovered his love for writing after a friendly encounter with his first girlfriend on social media. A long time ago, she helped him verbalize his emotions, leading him into the world of poetry.
Remembering his old poems and encouraged by his biggest supporter, his wife Cheryl, he felt inspired to write again.
Soon, he started turning his poetry into songs, even though he wasn’t sure how to do it at first. His friends and wife Cheryl encouraged him, saying his style sounded like country music, which surprised him because he never thought of himself as a country songwriter.
“It’s exciting because I never know what he will write next. I think he wrote the song “As I Take Your Hand” for our anniversary just after doing a couple of reggae songs, proving he could do soft rock. This song brings me tears each time I play it,” Cheryl reflects.
With the help of a music producer named Larry, Dave turned his words into actual songs. His first song, “Your Subtle Style,” marked the beginning of The Dave Black Expression. Even though Dave didn’t have much experience in music, he learned a lot from listening to classic bands like The Doors. He believes that his songs, influenced by artists like Bob Dylan, are a mix of old-school vibes and new ideas. Dave thinks that real creativity comes from blending different inspirations into something unique.
Dave also wrote and published a book, The Things I Couldn’t Say Until Today, in October 2022, marking 3/3 of his dreams.
