Alex Henley is no stranger to the music scene. As a singer, songwriter, guitarist, bassist, and producer, Alex has been deeply embedded in the rich musical culture of Central Texas since his childhood. Growing up around legendary musicians like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Blaze Foley, and Alvin Crow, Henley has always had a dream to leave his mark on the Central Texas music scene. Despite life’s curveballs, including injuries and starting a family, Alex has found his way back to his first love—music.
A Musical Upbringing in Austin
Born and raised in Central Texas, Alex was immersed in the music culture of Austin during the 80s, thanks in part to his mother’s connections to local musicians. His early exposure to legends like Stevie Ray Vaughan and the constant presence of live music deeply influenced his sensibilities. One of the biggest influences in Alex’s life was Bill Livingood, a musician and owner of Slow Printing, a t-shirt company for Austin artists. Livingood gave Alex his first studio experience at just 10 years old, allowing him to record his very first song, “Working Sideways.” Decades later, in 2024, Alex re-recorded and released the same song, a testament to his enduring love for music.
Overcoming Obstacles
Alex’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. At 22, he experienced a severe injury that could have derailed his musical career. A run-in with a table saw destroyed the middle knuckle of his index finger, permanently affecting his guitar playing. More recently, Alex underwent surgery to remove half of his thyroid and two vocal cord polyps. Though these challenges have tested him, Alex’s resilience shines through. He’s still on the path to regaining full vocal strength but remains dedicated to his music.
A Distinct Voice in Blues, Jazz, and Rock
What sets Alex apart is his polished voice and his ability to blend different musical influences. Drawing inspiration from blues, rock, and jazz, Alex has honed his craft to create unique songs that pay homage to the music he grew up loving while staying fresh and original. His latest singles, including “Working Sideways,” “Big Talker,” “First Sight,” and “Slow Burning,” showcase his versatility and willingness to challenge traditional genre boundaries, much like bands such as Snarky Puppy.
Career Highlights
Over the past two decades, Alex has had the honor of playing with incredible musicians across the world. One of the highlights of his career was his performance at the Au Pres du Blues Festival in southern France, where he was invited on stage by the British rock band Dr. Feelgood. Now, Alex is excited to perform at both the Bastrop Music Festival and the Smithville Music Festival in 2024, continuing his tradition of bringing his unique sound to new audiences.
Looking Ahead
As Alex looks to the future, he envisions collaborating with fellow musicians to connect their audiences. His goal is to continue playing at clubs and festivals in Texas and abroad, growing his presence in both the local and international music scenes. Alex’s passion for martial arts—he holds second-degree black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo—has also shaped his approach to life, providing him with discipline and determination, traits that serve him well in his musical career.
Alex Henley’s story is one of resilience, passion, and a lifelong love for music. Whether he’s recording in the studio, performing on stage, or teaching martial arts, Alex continues to push boundaries and reinvent himself. With his rich history in the Austin music scene and his sights set on new horizons, Alex Henley is a name to watch in 2024 and beyond.
