Southern soul & R&B singer Matt B has been carving his name into the culture with authenticity, versatility, and a voice that connects deeply with listeners. From his breakout record Steppin Boots to his newest single Hello, I’m Matt B, the South Carolina native continues to merge old-school soul with fresh energy. His artistry isn’t about fitting into one lane—it’s about expression, storytelling, and reaching people where they are.

We caught up with Matt B to talk about his journey, influences, challenges, and what fans can expect next.

When did you first realize music was more than just a hobby?

I realized singing was more than a hobby when my family told me to stop playing around. They said, “You can really sing, and you need to take it serious.” That’s when I knew it was something I had to pursue.

What was the moment that made you say, “This is it”?

That moment was when I made the chorus team. Singing out loud, people always gave me compliments on my voice and told me how much they enjoyed it. That encouragement made me know this was my path.

When you’re writing, what comes first?

The beat. I like to vibe with the beat first, then brainstorm and piece everything together like a puzzle until I know which direction I want to go.

Who are some of your biggest influences?

Calvin Richardson, R. Kelly, Dru Hill, Ginuwine, Tank, King George, Tyrese, Sir Charles Jones, and Usher.

If someone’s never heard your music, where should they start?

Definitely The Friday Weekend Joint. It brings that good old-school feeling—you can even do the electric slide to it. And everybody, including grandma, knows how to do the electric slide.

What’s been your hardest obstacle so far as an artist?

Performing in front of hundreds of people and getting the crowd engaged. At first, it was intimidating, but now it’s a dream come true to have fans singing along with me while I perform.

Which song would you say changed your life?

Steppin Boots. That was my first big record. I was going through a lot, but I joined a competition on March 21st at My House Bar & Grill—going against 60 artists. It was my first time performing that song, and I won 1st place. That was a turning point for me.

How do you view the music scene in South Carolina?

It’s up and down across every genre. My advice is to be everywhere. Show your face, network, apply pressure, and let people see you’re serious. And above all—stay humble.

What’s the most misunderstood thing about you?

People try to put me in a box, keeping me in one genre. But I’m versatile—I can sing in any genre of music.

What’s next for Matt B?

I’ve got more music videos dropping soon, and my hot single Hello, I’m Matt B is already out on all platforms. I also have shirts for the kids with the single name on them. Plus, I’m working on big collaborations with TheRubylyn, Shai Kelly, Tone Drake, Carolina Bree, Wayne Gigalow Jones, MAINTAINE, Jonrea the Artist, Panessia Young, Jameerxxx, OG Wali, Maj Da Prince, and Kwame Sowers.
