Not Bound by Titles: A Student of Rap
When asked about his preferred title, Calm the Futurist doesn’t dwell on labels. He considers himself a student of rap and proudly identifies as a rapper. With over twelve years of experience, his journey began in middle school as a battle rapper, with lunchtime rap battles leading to his first performance in front of his entire class in 8th grade.
From Breakup to Beatmaker: Discovering Production
In 9th grade, after a breakup, Calm turned to music production. Inspired by his cousin’s success in music, a spark of curiosity—and a bit of jealousy—drove him to try his hand at creating music. From then on, he never stopped, turning his hobby into a passion that has shaped half his life.
A Unique Perspective: Sharing Knowledge, Not Gatekeeping
What sets Calm the Futurist apart from others in the industry is his willingness to share knowledge. Having worked his way up from zero and armed with a Bachelor’s degree in music business, he makes it a point to support emerging talent. Whether it’s offering features to new rappers or helping them navigate the music world, Calm’s dedication to the culture and the lyrics ensures he’s always putting his best foot forward.
Calm’s career is marked by impressive milestones, including opening for Curren$y and headlining the first Astro Fest in Lafayette. Notably, he met DJ Jabberjaws and connected with Cupid (Cupid Shuffle), who became a mentor during his time at college. Calm values Cupid’s guidance, especially regarding navigating the challenges of being an independent artist.
