BEKA BARZ Turns Heartbreak Into a Rap Revolution With Wannabe

Rising UK rap sensation BEKA BARZ has unleashed her latest single Wannabe, a fearless blend of raw emotion and playful confidence that turns heartbreak into a powerful anthem. This rap banger, infused with a cheeky nod to the Spice Girls’ classic, flips their iconic line into a sassy declaration: If you wanna be my lover, then don’t get with my friends. Inspired by the betrayal of a cheating ex, BEKA BARZ channels emotion into a light-hearted yet empowering hit that’s already lighting up airwaves on BBC Radio 1Xtra and Asian Network.

Crafted in her home studio under her production alias B3K, BEKA BARZ showcases her multifaceted talent as she recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered Wannabe herself. The track’s infectious beat came to life through a unique collaboration with Zimbabwean beat maker EliQr64, with whom she connected via WhatsApp. Despite a language barrier, their creative synergy flowed through the music’s energy.

The accompanying music video, directed and edited by BEKA BARZ and filmed by her wife, Aimee Buffong, through their company Four Reel, brings the song’s story to vibrant life. Featuring actor Go Punk and rising rapper Madi G, the video captures the hilarity of a memorable scene where BEKA BARZ playfully shoves Go out of her car, an unscripted moment that had the set in stitches. This visual storytelling underscores her hands-on approach to her art, blending sharp lyricism with cinematic creativity.

BEKA BARZ raises the bar with Wannabe, a release that radiates confidence, originality, and sheer talent. By steering every element of the track under her B3K alias, she proves herself not only a gifted lyricist but also a producer and engineer with a sharp ear for detail. The pulsating backdrop, born from a seamless collaboration with Zimbabwean creative EliQr64, injects fresh energy that complements her commanding delivery. On screen, the Four Reel-directed video amplifies the song’s playful edge with witty storytelling and unforgettable moments that embody her fearless spirit. More than a single, Wannabe is a declaration of BEKA BARZ’s artistry—bold, inventive, and impossible to ignore.

Hailing from Worcestershire, BEKA BARZ, born Rebekah Selena Buffong, is a British rapper, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer of Montserratian and Pakistani descent. Her journey began in the Seventh-day Adventist church, where music became her outlet for navigating her sexual identity through rap. Over the past 15 years, she’s carved a niche with her genre-defying sound, blending catchy melodies with razor-sharp rhymes. Her dynamic performances, from headlining the BBC Introducing stage at Latitude Festival in 2023 to shining at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in 2021, have cemented her as a force in the UK music scene.

Recognized as one of BBC Asian Network’s ‘Ones To Watch’ in 2024 and a recipient of the inaugural BBC Introducing X PRS Foundation Artist Development Fund, BEKA BARZ is no stranger to industry acclaim. BBC Introducing’s Andrew Marston praises her as a groundbreaking artist whose creativity, discipline, and vision shine through in her original beats, polished performances, and visually stunning live shows.
