Chris Cachia’s newest single, “Bars and Bass,” is (to borrow from the song’s lyrics) “boundless brilliance.” Going “back to basics,” the track witnesses Cachia’s skilful songwriting abilities and producer Charlie McEvoy’s musical artistry. The track feels like the best moment of a jam session, as the conversational start gives way to bars upon bars (and bass upon bass) of classic-sounding Hip Hop. Rhyme aficionados, take notice.

“Bars and Bass” comes on the heels of two other singles by Cachia: “Hot and Cold” and “Above and Below.” There’s a real dualism to Cachia’s current musical output which his upcoming project, The 27th Letter, is sure to explore. One feels there’s a philosophical underpinning to Cachia’s music, and McEvoy’s spare backdrop here gives space for Cachia’s forceful voice and flow to shine.

After releasing his debut album in 2007, Chris relates how he took an eight-year break away from making music as he managed a particularly challenging period of obsessive compulsive disorder. His return to music, with a series of EPs released beginning in 2015 and his latest album, Persona, released in 2022, has been an attempt to harness his personal struggles to heal through art. His overall message is that creativity can be used as means to both address mental health concerns and issues of social injustice.
