We have chosen DJ Chris Cali as our next Artist of the Week. Just in “time” for his new release, Matter of Time. The Southern Californian DJ has been actively performing, producing, and writing for the last few years, ultimately leading to the momentum he has now. After years of struggles, success, and tribulation, DJ Chris Cali is now a contender to become one of Los Angeles’ top performing artists.
The track introduces itself with a catchy club-like riff that leads to an array of sounds, or better put, a wall of sound. The drums inspire you to get up and move, while the vocal melody serves as an everlasting foil to the track’s lead riff. There are a range of sound effects present that help the song gently transition through each verse, chorus, and so on
The chorus soars through the mix with electric pianos, synthesizers, and with what sounds like an organ with a Wah Wah pedal attached to it. Whether or not that’s the best comparison or analogy is up for debate, but what isn’t up for debate is how catchy the song is. The audible landscape that’s curated throughout the song is unique, refreshing, and ambient. It would be defined as ear candy, where the parts that are purposely quieter end up luring you into either rewinding the entire song or simply turning up the volume. It really does feel out-of-this-world or at least makes you feel like you’re out of this world.
The stride continues with the bridge which is formulated by an addicting melody that segues from the lead riff. It feels funky, it feels like techno, but it feels like it’s being “housed” in the normal foundation for any replayable EDM song. The kick drum appears again halfway through the bridge and rejuvenates that feeling to get up and dance as the song prepares itself for the final chorus. The solo holds up most of the weight prior to the closing moments.
With the addition of a few vocals, sound effects, and what seems to be a cowbell, the final chorus is not sold short. The track reasserts itself as the perfect candidate to be played on repeat, whether that be at a club, on the radio, or wherever you’d normally listen to music. Everything feels alive, and the dynamic structure implemented by DJ Chris Cali is most effective in this section of the song. All of the instruments, effects, and vocals mixed together for one last chorus before the song, potentially prematurely, fades to the outro section. The remainder of the song draws back its initial force and helps ease the listener out of its grasp.
