As the rap battle between Drake and Kendrick Lamar continues to heat up, everyone seems to be weighing in on the lyrical exchange of jabs. Anonimuss Rose, rising singer-songwriter and hip hop artist who recently signed a distribution deal with Universal/Virgin Music Group, has given us her take on the beef between the mega stars of hip hop.
“People need to understand that this is culture versus commodity. Conscious vs Commercial.” Anonimuss says. “There is a much deeper meaning to all of this once you peel back the layers.”
Anonimuss, who released her album “Anonymous” in the midst of the battle, sides with Kendrick Lamar while openly admitting to liking Drake as well.
“I like old Drake.” Anonimuss clarifies. “The Drake that sang and rapped to women. I like that Drake. As soon as he started acting tough and rapping like he was ‘like that’, he lost me.”
Anonimuss believes that Kendrick Lamar represents the essence and culture of hip hop. Artists such as Kendrick and J Cole were able to amass mainstream
success without having to compromise their creative integrity; this is the lane that Anonimuss sees herself in.
“I know my music isn’t for the club or the turn up most of the time.” Anonimuss admits. “Its a vibe and it makes you feel, think, laugh, cry, and everything in between. Basically, I stand for something. And like Kendrick, it shows in my music. What does Drake stand for?”
Like the rest of us, Anonimuss is enjoying the show with popcorn and slushy in hand. However, she does have a bit of advice for both Drake and Kendrick Lamar moving forward:
“Black men, I love yall and this has been amazing to experience…now wrap this shit up so people can go stream my album! (laughs)”
