There’s a chill that runs through the very word Derangement and it perfectly captures the heart of Virga Šikšniūtė’s new existential drama starring musician and filmmaker Paul Pedana in his most haunting performance yet. Directed by Virga Šikšniūtė who, as Pedana joking said, “holds the reins not just of the film, but of everything at home too” Derangement follows a solitary, homeless man wandering through fractured landscapes of snow, ruin, and hallucination. His only companion: Charlie, a battered teddy bear who becomes both confidant and mirror of his collapsing psyche.
The story, inspired by existential cinema of the 1970s and filtered through a vintage lens, plays like a visual poem.
